The treaty was signed to resolve issues that had arisen from the war between the Russia and the Ottomans and the Ottomans controlling much of the Balkans. The treaty recognized the autonomy of many Balkan states such as Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. The treaty also included some war reparations as well as territorial gains for Russia and her allies. Some European states, such as Britain, Germany, and Austria-Hungary did not respond well to Russia gaining more territory as they were worried that Russia would get too powerful. Ultimately, the powers opposed decided to convene the Congress of Berlin in 1878 to reduce Russian influence in the region.
