I design a study of Pokémon Go, an augmented reality game that allows individuals to play a video game on their phones while walking through the real world. I am particularly interested in understanding how, if at all, the video game facilitates interpersonal interaction and the how individuals interpret interpersonal interaction in the context of the video game. In order to study this, I spend 3 hours a day (split out over the course of 9am-5pm) sitting on a park bench pretending to read. As individuals and groups walk by, I try and notice if they are playing the game. If so, I take detailed notes on their behavior. In addition, I approach them and ask if they would be willing to participate in an academic study. If they agree, I conduct a brief in-depth interview with them.
