The battle, a Union victory that left 6000 dead and 17000 wounded, was the bloodiest day of the war. It started because Lee believed that he had MCClellan's Forces on the run and invaded Maryland. He believed that Lincoln would sue for peace if Maryland was dislodged from the Union by a northern soul victory. McClellan intercepted Lee and they fought and this caused the battered army of Northern Virginia to go back home limping. Lincoln removed McClellan from command and appointed General Ambrose Burnside
