US troops crossed Bull Run Creek to go to D.C. and ran into civilians who came out from D.C. to picnic and watch the union victory. Panic broke out and civilians and soldiers became engtangled in traffic jams. McDowell's army fell apart. CSA did not pursue but remained on the field to claim the spoils of war.
